2014 FIFA World Cup

Soccer is not usually my sport.   It is not something I follow.   I know some of the players here and there but that is really only because they are mentioned in the sports section of the Chicago Tribune .   Sometimes I recognize a team name.   Other than that, I know very little about soccer.   It turns out I don’t even know when a goal is a goal.   I thought when the ball went into the net it was considered a goal and the kicking team got a point.   Apparently that’s not always the case.   There is something called offside which prevents a goal from being a goal.   All I know is it makes me very confused.   Oh, well, despite my confusion, and lack of usual interest, I am having a great time watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup.                 The first time I ever really watched professional soccer was the 2008 UEFA European Championship.   I don’t remember how I came across it, or why I even watched the games, but I did.   Then I didn’t pay attention again u

Somewhere in France: A Novel of the Great War by Jennifer Robson

When I first saw Somewhere in France: A Novel of the Great War in the Bas Bleu catalog I immediately thought of the History Channel’s mini-series The World Wars .   The first episode of the mini-series was about World War I and I can’t tell you how many times I watched it.   While we learned about World War I in school, I don’t remember the lessons being as extensive as those for other wars.   The World Wars sparked my interest in World War I, so when I saw Somewhere in France I was intrigued.   I became especially more so when I saw the book was about a woman serving her country in the war and not a man.                          Lady Elizabeth, more commonly referred to as Lilly, has led a privileged life.   With a title and a lot of family money she has the ability to get pretty much whatever she wants.   The problem is the one thing Lilly truly wants cannot be bought with money and her family won’t let her have it.   What Lilly wants is to be free.   She doesn’t

Bas Bleu

One of my favorite things to do is circle in catalogs.     I will go through page by page and circle the things I like.   This is something I have done my entire life and for some reason I find it calming.   I’m not saying I buy anything that I circle.   It is extremely rare that I do, but I love to see what possibilities are out there in the world.   I also don’t do this with every catalog that crosses my path.   There are certain catalogs I look out for because I know I will be excited to see what is on the pages.   Bas Bleu is one of those catalogs that I eagerly await.   Full of books and other fun items I never know what I am going to find inside.   The creators of the catalog are always discovering something new and unique that I don’t know if I would be able to find anywhere else.                 As this is a book catalog, the primary concern of Bas Bleu is to feature books.   The books, however, are not exactly what I would call mainstream.   They are

TV on DVD

Finally, finally, finally!   It seemed like it took forever, but I finally received the first disc of Murdoch Mysteries: Season 6 .   I don’t have any idea what took it so long.   First it wasn’t available at all, which drove me crazy because I knew it was in stores.   Then it was available but stuck on very long wait.   I started to think it would never arrive in my mailbox.   Now it has and I am very happy.   DVD is the only option I have for watching Murdoch Mysteries .   I don’t have any channel that airs the shows, and besides, I want to be sure I am watching everything in order.   That cannot be guaranteed with reruns.   Sometimes channels jump around to different seasons when airing the reruns or have the show in syndication.   This can get confusing when there are complicated storylines that stretch for entire seasons or more.   I started getting NCIS on DVD for this very reason.   The channel that airs NCIS in syndication constantly jumps around and I alway
