Some shows struggle with their second season. I am happy to say, Whitstable Pearl is not one of those shows. The characters and storylines this second season have more depth than they did in the first. We learn so much more about why the characters are the way they are, and we get to see more sides of them. This makes me very eager to see how much more we will learn in the third season, if there is one. “Babylon” Pearl and Mike have moved on from their relationship, or have they? Private investigator and restaurant owner Pearl Nolan (Kerry Godliman) has moved on from her relationship with DCI Mike McGuire (Howard Charles). She is dating a teacher, Tom Grant (Robert Webb). Mike has moved on too. He is dating a woman he met at grief counseling, Kat Bergman (Emily Head). Now the question is, have these two actually moved on, or are they just pretending to have done so? Because when they look for a missing boy, it is clear there are some unresolved feelings between Pearl and Mik...

The David Suchet version of Murder on the Orient Express definitely veers away from the book. The core story is there, but so much else is different. Murder on the Orient Express Hercule Poirot’s beliefs are challenged Hercule Poirot’s ( David Suchet ) summation does not go according to plan. The guilty party, a soldier, shoots himself before Poirot can have him arrested. This suicide rattles Poirot, but he remains certain the soldier would not have felt he must go to such desperate measures had he not lied in the first place. He also insists that no matter the reason for the crime, justice must be done. After this, Poirot witnesses a woman being stoned to death. The woman was carrying the child of someone who was not her husband, leading to this punishment. Of course, we do not see any punishment towards the man. A couple witness the stoning too. The woman, Mary Debenham ( Jessica Chastain ), is particularly distressed, but there is nothing any of them can do. This all ha...

It’s funny how I look forward to each new season of Agatha Raisin even though Agatha herself drives me crazy. Her self-absorption is too much for me. How people don’t tell Agatha off more often, I have no idea. I’m not saying Agatha is all bad. If she was, I don’t know if I could watch this show at all, no matter how good the mysteries are. Fortunately, there are other characters that balance out the episodes. In many ways, I watch this show for them.  Agatha Raisin Season 4 Ashley Jensen Agatha Raisin is not a bodyguard It’s Christmas time in the Cotswolds in the first episode of the fourth season, “Kissing Christmas Goodbye.” Private investigator Agatha Raisin (Ashley Jensen) has delegated the planning of Christmas to her friend Roy Silver (Mathew Horne). Roy is trying his hardest to get Christmas together, but Agatha keeps upsetting his plans. Because when Agatha gets a case, everything else must be put on the back burner. Agatha’s case involves the death of a woman. Phyl...

I saw the most recent adaptation of Death on the Nile (2022) and walked away confused. It was very different from the other film versions I have seen. This made me wonder which film version was closest to the book. To find out, I had to actually read Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie. I also had to rewatch the David Suchet and Peter Ustinov versions in order to compare everything accurately. Death on the Nile is one of those titles probably everyone has at least heard of. Whether they have read the novel or watched any of the adaptations is a different story. I myself had never read the book, but I had seen two adaptations before this most recent one. For this experiment, I got the book from the library , eager to read it, not knowing what a chore it would be. Death on the Nile was not an easy read. Although, I will give the book the benefit of the doubt. Had I not known the ending so well, I may have enjoyed the book more. Death on the Nile Agatha Christie Too much money lea...

I checked the library website for months to see if Whitstable Pearl was anywhere in our county library system. It is usually pretty good at getting the Acorn Original TV shows once they are available on DVD . That is why I was surprised no one in the system had this one. Except they did. For months I was leaving out the first “t,” a mistake I kept with me because I had read the title too fast when I first saw it. It’s funny how things like that can stick with you. Every time I saw the title afterwards, I removed the first “t.” Thankfully, I eventually saw my mistake and was able to watch this show. Whitstable Pearl Series 1 Kerry Godliman and Howard Charles You never know what people know Restaurant owner and private detective Pearl Nolan (Kerry Godliman) is the unfortunate person to find her friend Vinnie dead. Pearl becomes the immediate suspect and is questioned by the police repeatedly. The final officer to question her is DCI Mike McGuire (Howard Charles). Pearl lets Mike ...

Midsomer Murders Series 22 Neil Dudgeon, Nick Hendrix Another season of Midsomer Murders has come and gone. Six episodes of DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) working to solve the strange and unusual murders of Midsomer County. Series 22 starts with the episode “The Wolf Hunter of Little Worthy.” An urban myth is floating around town. A myth everyone knows was created by a contest. Yet, the people have picked up on this myth as though it was real. It is even being used to kill people. At the same time, a new glamping site has been set up. Complete with hot tub and massages, it would seem people would be thrilled to have this new business in town. This is not the case. Campers and townspeople alike do not like this glamping business. Someone dislikes it so much, they are doing whatever they can to sabotage it. “The Stitcher Society” is about a club for people recovering from heart surgery. It is a close-knit club until a suspected murderer is allo...

The third season of The Heart Guy ( Doctor Doctor ) is the best season so far.   Pretty much all the characters have improved to some extent.   All of them have gone through difficult situations and made important decisions in their lives.   This season is also more serious than previous ones, but there is humor too.   All this together is what makes season three the best so far.      The Knight family will never be the same.   Watching the stars with his wife Meryl (Tina Bursill), Jim Knight (Steve Bisley) has a heart attack and dies.   Meryl is filled with grief and guilt because she could not save him.   The only glimmer of comfort she has is when her heart surgeon son, Hugh ( Rodger Corser ), tells her even he would not have been able to save his father.      With Jim’s death, Hugh inherits the farm, along with the debt.   Hugh has no interest in the farm.   He has plans to leave the...
