Movies

Sometimes I find movies I want to write about and don’t for some reason.   The two main reasons for this are A) I have to return the disc before I get the chance to write, and B) I don’t know if I have enough to say for a full post.   And, okay, sometimes I just don’t feel like writing at all. Film Reel /Artwork by Kate Dorsey                                 No matter what the reason for why I don’t create a full post for something, it still remains on my mind, because I do want others to see what I have seen.   Below are three films I did not write their own post, for one reason or another, but I still want people try for themselves and enjoy.          Gifted                 Frank...

Informational Books

Image
Book /Artwork by Kate Dorsey                            I love learning and have always enjoyed seeing how things are made.   So, it shouldn’t come as any surprise I read informational books from time to time.   Below are three books I have found especially interesting. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft Stephen King                 On Writing is my absolutely favorite book about writing.   It is a mix of things: autobiography, writing tools, thoughts on writing, and advice.   This is a good book for both those who are interested in writing and for those who like Stephen King.                 For the autobiography part, I found it fascinating how important Mr. King’s wife, Tabby, is to his writing career.   Even while her writi...

The Isle of Guernsey during the German Occupation

Image
For as long as I can remember, I have read about and studied World War II.   Mostly what I have looked into has been the Holocaust, which is probably why I missed the information about the German occupation of the Channel Islands.   That, however, cannot be the full reason.   With all the things I have read and watched, and with having taken more than one class that covered World War II, one would think somewhere along the line this occupation would have been mentioned.   Either I completely missed it, or it truly was not mentioned.   That is why, when I started watching the show Enemy at the Door , I found myself learning an entirely different part of World War II that I knew nothing about. Image provided by Acorn DVD. Enemy at the Door follows the lives of the citizens of the Isle of Guernsey during the World War II German occupation, as well as the ruling Germans that occupy it.  ...

Little Free Libraries

I am fortunate to be part of a community that has a fantastic public library system.   Not everyone can claim that.   Some people live in places that don’t have libraries at all.   It’s a sad state of affairs, which is why I’m thrilled that Little Free Libraries have become such a success.   Little houses of books sit on people’s lawns or in public places inviting those who pass by to either take a book or leave a book for someone else to enjoy.   The books are free and there aren’t any due dates.   Without operating hours, anyone can come by at any time of day and look for something to read.   In my neighborhood, so many Little Free Libraries are popping up that if I don’t see anything of interest in one library, I usually don’t have far to go before finding another one.   In many ways, the Little Free Libraries have become an adventure, as I come across libraries I hav...

Libraries

At this time of gift giving it probably seems strange to read about a place where you borrow, but I love libraries no matter what time of year it is.   I always have.   For me libraries are sanctuaries that provide me with knowledge and quiet.   There is only one I can think of that I have ever truly disliked.   When I walked through the doors it was as quiet as a tomb, and they wanted it that way.   There was to be no sound whatsoever, which made it difficult to look at the books in the stacks.   I was always concerned that any movement I made would disrupt the world and I would either get severely glared at or asked to leave all together.   Being asked to leave over making a slight noise would be an extreme action, but when something is that quiet, it does make one wonder.   Fortunately very few libraries in my experience are this intense.   Most are wel...
