Season 7: Episode 2 One would think, once you find out a woman is unavailable, you would stay away from her. But not Will. He goes right back into her arms. Grantchester Season 7 Robson Green, Kacey Ainsworth Tom Brittney, Al Weaver Tessa Peake Jones, Nick Brimble The delusion of love After Reverend Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) finds out the truth about his love interest, Maya (Ellora Torchia), he’s not sure what to do with himself. He spends time alone, under a tree, smoking. Or at least that is what he is doing when Maya shows up again. After which they go to bed together, again. (Now you see why I said in the last post Will is acting like an idiot?) Will is now more certain than ever that he is in love. He makes plans about marriage and kids; two things Maya clearly does not want to talk about. What Will does not think about is the fact he is participating in infidelity. One would think a reverend would have at least a little hesitation about this, but I guess not. Nor d...

Season 7: Episode 1 Get ready for a season of men acting like idiots. Will especially. I don’t know where Reverend Will Davenport’s head is in this seventh season of Grantchester , but it’s not in a good place. Grantchester Season 7 Robson Green and Tom Brittney Geordie’s in trouble again DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) is living at the vicarage now that his wife, Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) has kicked him out of the house. Before this, he already spent a lot of time with Reverend Will Davenport (Tom Brittney). Now that they are living together, he spends even more. Except the time they spend together is not always spent doing something Geordie wants to do. Instead of going to the local pub Geordie is happy to go to, one night Will drags Geordie to a jazz club. This is definitely not Geordie’s scene. When Will ditches Geordie for a woman on the dance floor, Geordie is all too happy to ditch Will in return. It’s probably a good thing Geordie took off that night. He was schedul...

I Was Better Last Night: A Memoir

Image
I almost stopped reading I Was Better Last Night part way through. It was getting too heavy for me, which makes me sound like I have watched far too much Back to the Future . Although, I probably have. I watch a lot of Back to the Future . After deciding I was going to stop reading, I looked at the index to see if there was any topic I still wanted to read about before I returned the book to the library . What I found was “AIDS Memorial Quilt.” A quilter myself, I was curious how the author, Harvey Fierstein, was connected to the quilt. As I tried to find the page about the quilt, I came across the stage musical Kinky Boots . I wanted to see this show in its Chicago previews (having loved the movie ) but did not get the chance. Even with this Kinky Boots memory, I kept moving to the page about the quilt. What I discovered when I found the page was the fact Mr. Fierstein himself is a quilter. Between that and Kinky Boots , I decided I had to continue with the book. I Was Better L...

How Y’all Doing?

How Y'all Doing? Leslie Jordan T he day I finished How Y’all Doing?: Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived , I read an article about librarians facing an increase in filings about “books of concern.” Books mostly about either the LGBTQ+ community or race. For some reason, people are petitioning libraries to take these books off the shelves. Books they have possibly never even read but decided no one should. After reading the article, I decided I had to write about this book from Leslie Jordan. Some would believe How Y’all Doing? should not be read simply because Mr. Jordan is gay. That his story should be silenced. Neither Mr. Jordan’s nor anyone else’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or race should determine whether or not their story is told. They all have a right to be heard. On that exact same day, I started reading the Harvey Fierstein autobiography. Leslie Jordan is one of those actors you just know. You may not know his name, as I didn’t, but probably rec...

Grantchester Tom Brittney Photo of DVD cover taken by Kate Dorsey      Talk about a sad, angering season. That is what season six of Grantchester is.      This doesn’t mean the entire season is bad. If it was, I wouldn’t be writing about it!      I also wouldn’t be saying how happy I am Grantchester has moved from six episodes to eight. No matter how sad some of the storylines were this season, I am happy about that.      Curate Leonard Finch (Al Weaver) is the main reason why this season is so sad and angering. His storyline is what makes this season difficult to watch a lot of times. All Leonard wants to do is be a curate and be with the man he loves. And yet, because of one nasty, mean, jealous person, all that is put at risk.      It all starts with a vacation. Reverend William Davenport (Tom Brittney); DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and family; vicarage housekeeper Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jone...

Pride

I’m really not sure how I came across Pride .   I don’t know if it was from the Milwaukee Film Festival catalog.   Or it could have been a recommended film on Netflix.   Maybe it was a preview in the front of another film.   As much as I like to know how I found something, in the end, does it really matter?   Probably not.   What matters is whether or not I think this is a good film.   I do.                 It’s 1984 and the miners of Great Britain are on strike.   They have been on strike for months, with no end in sight.   To help the cause, a man by the name of Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) decides to form a group that will collect money for the miners.   The group is called Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners.   They are a group of gay men and a woman who figure out ways to collect money that will then be give...

Bohemian Rhapsody

I don’t know about you, but there have been times where I have seriously wondered why something or someone won the awards they did.   After watching Bohemian Rhapsody , I have no questions as to why Rami Malek won the Academy Award for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury.   He did a great job, and this is coming from someone who is very particular about who even sings the songs of Queen.   There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Malek deserved all the accolades he received.                              It’s the early 1970s, and Farrokh Bulsara (Rami Malek), who will later change his name to Freddie Mercury, is struggling to find a direction in his life.   It is a fact his father points out regularly.   Then, on a night Freddie goes to see a band he likes, his life changes forever.   H...

Love, Simon

I wasn’t sure I was going to write about this film.   Because of what the main character goes through, so much of it was awkward, painful, and uncomfortable to watch, especially when the character Martin was on the screen.   Then, all of a sudden, those moments lessened and Love, Simon turned into a really great film.   A film I think is important for people to see.                   Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) has a secret.   He’s gay.   No one knows this.   Not his family.   Not his friends.   Absolutely no one.   In order to finish his senior year as the guy everyone has known him as throughout his life, Simon decides he’s going to keep this secret to himself.   After that it’s unclear as to what he will do, but for now he will stay as the Simon everyone has known for so long.   It is a post by...

Torch Song Trilogy

It’s getting harder and harder to find channels that do not have political commercials.   This is why, more and more, I am finding myself watching films I have never heard of on TCM .   I watch TCM anyways, but usually it’s for a film I already know or have heard about for quite some time.   Torch Song Trilogy was a film I knew absolutely nothing about.   I saw it in my TV listings, and as it starred Harvey Fierstein, I thought I would give it a try.   The film was on late so I figured I would watch it for a few minutes before I went to bed just to see what the film was all about.   I ended up watching the whole thing.                        Arnold (Harvey Fierstein) is a female impersonator in the early 1970s.   Looking for love and acceptance, Arnold is th...
