Roger Federer

Over the Net Kate Dorsey Years ago, when I first started this blog, I wrote a post about Roger Federer but never put it up. I’m not fully sure why. Maybe it was because I didn’t want to alienate anyone by saying who my favorite tennis player was. Or maybe I felt I would jinx Roger (which is what we call Roger Federer in our house) by writing about him. Whatever the reason, once Roger announced his retirement, I felt ready to write and put up a post about him. This post is definitely different than what I originally intended to write about years ago, but it is time. The end of an era I found out from my brother that Roger had retired. He messaged me the morning of the announcement. Not long later, my mom called. Everyone in my family knows Roger is my favorite tennis player and always has been. They wanted me to know what was going on. The funny thing is, I would have found out about Roger’s retirement all on my own had I checked the sports news. I was about to, then I thought the...

2013 Tony Awards

I cannot believe I almost forgot to watch the Tony Awards this year.   For weeks I had been looking forward to the awards show.   But something happened on Friday that made it completely slip my mind.   Maybe I would have remembered again by the time they aired Sunday night.   Or maybe not.   Thankfully the Chicago Tribune mentioned the upcoming show (or was it the TV magazine?) and I was reminded.   I was so concerned I would forget again that I wrote the show down on my calendar.   The moment the festivities started I was so happy I did not miss it.                      Neil Patrick Harris was once again the host.   In my opinion, he did a fantastic job.   Mr. Harris is really good at what he does.   He reminds me of the greatness of Bi...

Genesis performed by the Milwaukee Ballet

When the brochure for the Milwaukee Ballet’s 2012-13 season arrived last year I came across Genesis in the line-up.   An International Choreographic Competition, I knew it was something I wanted to see.   I was curious to discover what up and coming choreographers were creating.   For months I waited for this event.   Finally, this past weekend, it arrived.                              The competition featured three different choreographers.   Each created a segment of dance about twenty minutes long.   All had their own story, costumes, lighting, music, and dancers.   There were two awards the choreographers had a chance to win.   First was the one chosen by a panel judges.   The other was the Audience...

CMA Awards

There are probably only two music awards shows I watch during the year.   Both happen to be country music.   The irony of this is country music is probably what I listen to the least.   Despite this, for some reason I feel compelled to watch the CMA Awards every year.                 The Country Music Association Awards is in many ways a giant concert.   I think that is why I like it so much.   It is performances without a lot of flash and distractions.   Occasionally there is a little something extra.   This year one of the performances had aerial acrobats.   While these women were noticeable, they did not divert attention from the talent on stage.   Everything is about the music during this ceremony.   That is something I really appreciate.         ...

Tony Awards

Even though it has been a bit since I was fully involved in the theatre, I like keeping up and knowing what is going on in the theatre world.   The biggest way I do this is by watching the Tony Awards.   During the awards, scenes from the nominated musicals are performed.   I am always excited to view these scenes because I want to know if there is one I want to go see once they go on tour as I have yet to make it to Broadway.   Also shown are bits from the nominated plays.                 Then there is the host.   I have seen Neil Patrick Harris perform the hosting duty twice now.   He does a wonderful job.   The show keeps moving with very infrequent uncomfortable lulls, and those usually only happen when he has given up the microphone.   He is funny and keeps the audience entertained t...
