I Was Better Last Night: A Memoir

Image
I almost stopped reading I Was Better Last Night part way through. It was getting too heavy for me, which makes me sound like I have watched far too much Back to the Future . Although, I probably have. I watch a lot of Back to the Future . After deciding I was going to stop reading, I looked at the index to see if there was any topic I still wanted to read about before I returned the book to the library . What I found was “AIDS Memorial Quilt.” A quilter myself, I was curious how the author, Harvey Fierstein, was connected to the quilt. As I tried to find the page about the quilt, I came across the stage musical Kinky Boots . I wanted to see this show in its Chicago previews (having loved the movie ) but did not get the chance. Even with this Kinky Boots memory, I kept moving to the page about the quilt. What I discovered when I found the page was the fact Mr. Fierstein himself is a quilter. Between that and Kinky Boots , I decided I had to continue with the book. I Was Better L...

Informational Books

Book /Artwork by Kate Dorsey                            I love learning and have always enjoyed seeing how things are made.   So, it shouldn’t come as any surprise I read informational books from time to time.   Below are three books I have found especially interesting. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft Stephen King                 On Writing is my absolutely favorite book about writing.   It is a mix of things: autobiography, writing tools, thoughts on writing, and advice.   This is a good book for both those who are interested in writing and for those who like Stephen King.                 For the autobiography part, I found it fascinating how important Mr. King’s wife, Tabby, is to his writing career.   Even while her writi...

Just Write

This is a cute movie.   A light-hearted, enjoyable, cute movie.   Some may scoff at a movie such as this, but sometimes a person needs something that doesn’t make you think too hard.   Instead of thinking about the complex motivations behind the characters’ actions, with a movie like Just Write , all you have to do is sit back and enjoy.                         Harold (Jeremy Piven) is a Hollywood tour guide.   He drives one of the trolleys that show tourists stars’ homes.   It is his dream job and something he has wanted to do his entire life.   While Harold is happy with his life, his family and friends around him believe he should be something more.   It isn’t until Harold meets an actress he admires that he starts to think the same.    ...

Murder She Wrote

Laugh at me all you want.   People have before.   I am here to admit that Murder She Wrote is one of my favorite television shows of all time.   It began airing in the 1980s and ended quite some time ago.   As I am unable to find the show on reruns, I watch the DVDs.   Although I would think I have seen all the episodes by now, some multiple times, once in awhile one I have not seen pops up on a disc.   This is always a pleasant surprise.   In any case, new to me or not, I always enjoy watching.                                 The series stars Angela Lansbury as mystery writer Jessica Fletcher.   She lives in the town of Cabot Cove, Maine but travels extensively both for business and to vis...
