2013 U.S. Open Series

It is that time of year again!   Now is the weeks between Wimbledon and the U.S. Open where there is a lot of televised tennis.   Five weeks to be exact.   Then it is the U.S. Open.   All these weeks make up the U.S. Open Series.   So far there has been one tournament; two if you are watching both the men and the women.   I happen to be watching, and will be talking about, only the men.   Some of the women’s matches I have caught a few moments of here and there, however.                   Last week the men played in Atlanta.   I was not able to see all the matches, but the ones I did see were good.   Often I was torn because I liked both of the players on the court.   The Isner/Hewitt match was especially difficult because I so wanted them both to win for two very different reasons.   I was really cheering for Lleyton Hewitt.   It is so great to see him doing well again, especially since people have tried to write him off so many times.   As for John Isner, I just

Make It Right: Expert Advice on Home Renovations by Mike Holmes

If I was able to choose any person in the world to come and remodel my home, I think I would choose Mike Holmes.   I have seen his show, which terrifies me, and I feel Mr. Holmes really knows what he is doing.   He also wants to make sure everything gets done right.   That is why I am absolutely crazy about his book, Making It Right: Expert Advice on Home Renovations .   Mr. Holmes covers a lot of important information and I refer to this book all the time, even when I am not doing anything to the house.                 One of the biggest and most important parts of the book is hiring a contractor.   The type of person you work with definitely determines how successful a project is or is not.   Mr. Holmes gives advice on what to look for in a contractor and the steps to take in order to make the right decision.   He also guides the reader through the relationship and situations that might arise between the contractor and the home owner.   If you only read one ch

American Ninja Warrior

Several months ago I came across the show American Ninja Warrior during a marathon on one of the cable channels.   I did not know what the show was and I thought I would only watch for a few minutes in order to figure out what exactly I was watching.   In the end I watched the rest of the marathon, which was on for several more hours.   Maybe it is because I liked American Gladiators , but I found this show to be absolutely fascinating.   When the marathon ended, I eagerly awaited the start of the new season.                                American Ninja Warrior is, for a lack of a better way to describe it, a competition consisting of obstacle courses.   Really challenging obstacle courses.   I cannot believe some of the things people are able to make it through.   Most involve performing acts while hanging in the air.   All of this is in an effort to reach and beat the ultimate challenge, Mount Midoriyama.   This is something no American has ever done.   In fact

Exit

There is a game show on TV that I really do not like.   Of course it feels as though this show is on all the time.   When I saw the commercials for the game show Exit , I thought it was going to be like the show I do not like.   The fear element reminded me of the other show which made me not interested at all in Exit .   Then I happened to come across an episode and I discovered something I did not see in the commercials.   There are a lot of trivia and brain teasers.   I love those things!   Now I am hooked.                            The premise of the show is that four teams of two must figure out trivia and brain teasers while facing down fears.   Each room the contestants go into uses some sort of fearful element to heighten the anxiety and make it difficult to think.   For me the most terrifying room would be the first room.   This is the Beam Room.   Contestants must figure out the puzzles while standing on an ever shortening plank.   Whoever loses this r

The Quick and the Thread: An Embroidery Mystery by Amanda Lee

I have yet another cozy mystery!   These are truly my favorite books.   They are definitely what I gravitate to most.   I do not know how many I have read over the years, and I do not plan on stopping any time soon.                             This cozy mystery series is set in an embroidery shop.   The main character, Marcy, has just moved to Tallulah Falls, OR in order to open the shop she has dreamed of for quite some time.   Her friend Sadie, who encouraged Marcy in the venture, has a coffee shop in the same area.   Actually, it was Sadie who let Marcy know there was a space for rent.   With her shop open, friend nearby, and a possible new love interest, Marcy feels her life is heading in the right direction.   Then she finds the body of the shop’s old tenant, Mr. Enright, in the storeroom.                 It would be distressing enough to find a dead body, but Marcy feels especially bad since Mr. Enright tried to talk to her the night before.   Believing
