Vera

Truth and Justice /Artwork by Kate Dorsey               Oh, Vera.   How eagerly I wait for your episodes every year.   And yet, I still somehow always end up behind!             Murders never seem to stop for DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn).   Fortunately, she has a good team around her, including DS Aiden Healy ( Kenny Doughty ), to help her investigate.   Aiden took DS Joe Ashworth’s (David Leon) position after he moved on because of a promotion.   A very caring, and patient, man, Aiden is a good match for Vera.           Also, on her team is DC Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison).   He has worked with Vera for I don’t know how long.   Certainly, since before the show started, as they sometimes refer to things from the past.   At first Kenny and Vera’s relationship was on the antagonistic side.   Now, as the seasons move on, there is a lot of care and respect between them.           While Aiden and Kenny have been consistent team members through the years, the others come

Dave

North America /Artwork by Kate Dorsey         I have a list of things I believe all politicians (and now judges) should be required to watch on a regular basis.   One of those things is the film Dave .   With those in power every day forgetting who they actually work for and serve, Dave is definitely a film they need to watch. President William “Bill” Mitchell (Kevin Kline) has had a stroke.   It happened during a romantic encounter with one of his White House staff.   While this would be a scandal all on its own, it is even more so because President Mitchell is married.                 This turn of events is a disaster for White House Chief of Staff, Bob Alexander (Frank Langella).   He has been using Mitchell for a long time, possibly even before Mitchell was elected.   Having Vice President Gary Nancy (Ben Kingsley) in power will not work because it will ruin all the underhanded things he has been doing.   It will also keep Alexander himself from becoming president. SS-GB

Secrets Revealed /Artwork by Kate Dorsey               The only reason I found SS-GB was because there was a preview of it on the discs for another show I was watching.   I may have seen the book this show is based on somewhere, but I’m not sure.   Either way, I was curious to see how someone imagined what the world would be like had Germany won the Battle of Britain during World War II.   It is a horrifying thought.   One that would have certainly made life very different.                        It’s 1941 London and the Germans are in control of Great Britain.   All the rules and laws in existence are changing to what the Germans want them to be.   Little, if anything, is being kept as it was before.          Amongst this upheaval, Detective Superintendent Douglas Archer (Sam Riley) is claiming the police will remain unpolitical.   They will investigate crimes and criminals as they always have, without German influence.   It is unclear as to whether Archer truly believes t

The Gown: A Novel of the Royal Wedding by Jennifer Robson

After watching the first two seasons of The Crown , I was especially interested to read The Gown .   The difference between the two is, while The Crown is all about England’s royal family, The Gown has them hardly in it.   Instead, the story is about the people who made Queen Elizabeth’s wedding gown, and they mystery surrounding them decades later.                 Princess Elizabeth is getting married.   Hartnell embroiderer Ann Hughes is ecstatic.   The Queen always gets her clothes from Norman Hartnell’s fashion house, so it would make sense the princess would have her wedding gown made there as well.   Although, no one can know this.   The location of the dress must not become public knowledge.   Everything about the dress must remain a secret, or else.               This is not an easy thing to do with reporters waiting outside the fashion house doors, hoping one of the workers will talk.   Unbeknownst to them, Hartnell has very dedicated and loyal workers.
