Father Brown

I don’t know what it is about mysteries, but I absolutely love them.   For those who have read this blog for awhile, this probably does not come as a surprise.   I mention different mystery shows and books all the time.   Now, thanks to PBS , I have an entirely new set to experience and possibly talk about.   The one show I have seen the most of is Father Brown .   It is about a mystery solving priest set in an English village several years after the Second World War.   I would like to say I have seen the series from the start, but I cannot.   So far I have not been able to find a convenient way to rent or borrow the DVDs of this series.   The only way I am able to watch this show is when it is aired on PBS and I don’t quite know where I am in the episodes.   For the most part that does not really matter, but every once in awhile I come across things that may have been explained in earlier episodes that I have yet to see.   Hopefully someday I will have an outlet to

The Amber Room by Steve Berry

When my mother saw Expedition Unknown was going to have an episode about the Amber Room, she asked me to let her know when it was going to be on so she wouldn’t miss it.   Expedition Unknown is not a show she usually watches, but with her love of Russian history and art in general, this was an episode she wanted to see.   I must say I was quite interested as well, beyond the fact that I enjoy the show no matter what the topic.   My interest in Russian history and art in general was definitely inherited from my mother.   Mix in World War II and you have me hooked.   This is why when my mother asked me if I had ever read Steve Berry’s The Amber Room I figured it was a book I should pick up.   I had read one or two of Mr. Berry’s books before so I already knew his writing, but I had never read The Amber Room .   How I missed that one, I’m not sure.   Knowing me, I probably thought it was part of a series, which would have made me hesitant to pick it up without having r

Resort Rescue

I will start by saying I am not sure what is going on with this show.   It first aired last fall but then disappeared after not many episodes.   Now it has reappeared again, but I don’t know for how long.   I’m hoping that means Travel Channel is in the midst of making a second season.   Since I don’t know this for sure, I’ll just have to wait and see.                 Resort Rescue is set up very much like Restaurant Stakeout .   Cameras are placed around the establishment and the host brings the owners into the control room to watch the captured footage.   The difference is, this time, host Shane Green puts cameras throughout an entire resort, not just a single restaurant.   With these cameras, Mr. Green takes a look at everything.   He films the check-in desk, hotel rooms, associated restaurants, and any type of amenities the resort happens to offer.   Mr. Green also sends in experts to pose as guests and give him the personal view and feeling of what is going

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes with Joe Layden

While there are diehard The Princess Bride fans in the world, I cannot claim to be one of them.   I like the movie, but I cannot quote every line nor do I have each scene memorized.   Now, if we’re talking about Clue , that’s an entirely different story.   That one I can quote very well from as well as run some of the scenes through my head.   However, that does not mean The Princess Bride is not memorable to me.   It is.   In fact, I would find it hard to believe that anyone would not see this film as memorable.   There are so many great parts that I would think at least one thing would stick into each person’s head.   For some it will be the sword fighting while others will remember the game of wits scene with the poison.   Others may recall the fire swamp with the Rodents of Unusual Size.   No matter what someone remembers most, I am pretty sure Cary Elwes covers it in his book, As You Wish .   If he doesn’t, I would be very surprised.
