The Net

This is a freaky movie.   I am completely, 100% serious.   This is not a horror movie, or even gruesome, by any means.   It is when I really think about what the movie is saying that I become absolutely terrified.                      Angela Bennett is a computer tech who holds the job of figuring out computer viruses.   Just before she goes on her first vacation in years, Angela receives a disk containing an extremely dangerous virus.   While she knows the virus is important, she does not realize how dangerous it is until later.   That is until it costs Angela her life.                 While on vacation Angela meets a man on the beach.   At first she is smitten and enjoys his attention.   Then he tries to kill her.   Due to an accident during an escape attempt, Angela is knocked unconscious.   She wakes up a few days later to discover there is some confusion about her identity.   It takes some effort to return home, but once she does, Angela finds things are worse than

The Widow's Kiss by Jane Feather

The time of Henry VIII has been an interest of mine probably ever since I began to learn about it.   Now that I have watched the television show The Tudors , I am especially fascinated.   Thank you, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Henry Cavill.   When my mother told me about a book series that touches on Henry VIII and the time after his reign, I was excited to give it a try.   The Widow’s Kiss starts off the series.                    Lady Guinevere Mallory is recently widowed; for the fourth time.   Throughout these four marriages, Guinevere has used her great legal mind to not only inherit, but also keep quite a sum of land.   Living with her are her two daughters from a husband she loved dearly and devoted servants she has had throughout her life.   Her most recent husband was a drunken brute, creating an uneasy life.   When he dies by falling out a window, it appears Guinevere can breathe easily again and bring her life back to normal.   There is just one unfor

Mao's Last Dancer

Sometimes previews are my favorite part of a movie.   They make me aware of films I may otherwise never hear about.   Previews are how I discovered Mao’s Last Dancer .   I had never heard of it before, and I am happy I found it.                        Li Cunxin is just a boy when he is moved from his family by the Chinese government.   They have him live at a school where he learns to become a ballet dancer.   For years Li struggles with the ballet technique and physical strength that is necessary for success.   He comes across a teacher who consistently insults him for his weaknesses, but finds support from another, more encouraging teacher.   While Li does try, it is not until his supportive teacher is dismissed that he becomes truly serious about building up his strength and being a more powerful dancer.   This work is what eventually earns him the privilege to dance in America.   The American stay is not meant to be long, but Li falls in love and does not want to r

Face Off

Watching how things are created absolutely fascinates me.   This is especially true when it comes to theatre and the movies.   I know I am supposed to have all of my attention on the actors and the story, but so often I find myself wondering how they were able to move a set piece or whether they filmed on a soundstage versus real life.   There are so many aspects that work together to form the final picture.   All I want to know is: How did they do it?                    Face Off , a competition of make-up artists, is able to satisfy part of my curiosity.   As most competition television shows go, every week there is a big challenge that serves as the justification for elimination.   Some, but not all, episodes also have a smaller, faster challenge to start off the show.   These maybe last a couple hours which is quite different from the elimination.   Those are much larger and can take a few days.   With so much sculpting, molding, and painting, the artists need
