Hotel Transylvania 2

Sometimes what you need is a really good laugh.   For awhile now, the best films to help me with this have been the animated ones.   I am finding that in animated films there are a lot more clever lines and not as much slapstick.   Since that is how I like my comedies, animated films are the way for me to go.                             Hotel Transylvania 2 is the sequel to Hotel Transylvania , an animated film from a few years ago.   This time around, Count Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez) and her human boyfriend, Johnny (Andy Samberg) have gotten married.   Soon after their honeymoon, Mavis discovers she is pregnant.   Mavis understands that with having a human father, her and Johnny’s child may turn out to be hum...

Strange Magic

For the past several years some of the best new films have been animated.   On the surface these films appear to be only for children, but they certainly aren’t.   Most have clever lines that both adults and kids will find humorous.   They may have different meanings to the two age groups, but both will be laughing.   Then there are the storylines.   They are youthful enough for kids to enjoy but have plenty of serious aspects that keep adults entertained.   Add in music and everyone ends up happy, which is exactly how I felt when I watched Strange Magic .                 It’s pretty bad that even fairies have to worry about getting cheated on.   Marianne (Evan Rachel Wood), the fairy princess, is flying around on her wedding day, singing a love song, when she comes upon her fiancé, Roland...

Big Hero 6

At this year’s Oscars, I wanted How to Train Your Dragon 2 to win the award for Best Animated Feature.   It didn’t.   Big Hero 6 won instead.   I was disappointed, especially since Big Hero 6 had not looked very interesting to me when I saw the commercials.   For the most part I was willing to leave it at that, but my mom was curious as to what everyone was so excited about.   I must say, now that I have seen the film, I can understand why people like it so much.   It is a cute movie with strong characters that turn themselves into superheroes.   There’s not a lot to dislike.                 Hiro (Ryan Potter) is a teenage genius who is not quite sure what to do with himself.   He’s attracted to the underground robot fighting world, but his brother, Tadashi (Daniel Henney), k...

Gnomeo and Juliet

Ever since I saw the film The Full Monty years ago I have had a thing for lawn gnomes.   I think they’re fun and quirky and I love when people do creative things with them.   This is why when I saw there was going to be a film called Gnomeo and Juliet , an animated film about lawn gnomes, I wanted to see it.   To be honest, wanting to see a film like Gnomeo and Juliet is kind of unusual for me.   It’s not because it’s animated, but because the story is based on the play Romeo and Juliet .   I hate Romeo and Juliet .   Except for the musical West Side Story , I avoid anything having to do with that play at all.   Which is why it probably took me so long to watch Gnomeo and Juliet even though I did want to see it.   Once I saw it once, I had to watch it again before I sent it back.   This hardly ever happens, which goes to show how much I liked this film. ...
