Grantchester

Grantchester Tom Brittney Photo of DVD cover taken by Kate Dorsey      Talk about a sad, angering season. That is what season six of Grantchester is.      This doesn’t mean the entire season is bad. If it was, I wouldn’t be writing about it!      I also wouldn’t be saying how happy I am Grantchester has moved from six episodes to eight. No matter how sad some of the storylines were this season, I am happy about that.      Curate Leonard Finch (Al Weaver) is the main reason why this season is so sad and angering. His storyline is what makes this season difficult to watch a lot of times. All Leonard wants to do is be a curate and be with the man he loves. And yet, because of one nasty, mean, jealous person, all that is put at risk.      It all starts with a vacation. Reverend William Davenport (Tom Brittney); DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and family; vicarage housekeeper Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones) and husband, Jack (Nick Brimble); and Leonard and his love, Daniel Marl

A Grave Matter: A Lady Darby Mystery by Anna Lee Huber

I don’t think I would like going to a ball. I’m not talking about the high school dance version. But the big society ones. Especially the balls in the 1800s. Where women wore tons of layers and had to figure out how to fit into a carriage. Sadly, for some, a ball might have been the only time a person could get out and be social. I guess if that were the case for me, maybe dealing with the huge clothing and too small carriage would have been worth it. Who knows, after those initial irritations, the ball could end up being a good time.      With the death of her long-lost friend on her mind, Lady Kiera Darby is very happy to spend time with her brother, Trevor. In his house she gets her own space to paint. She also has a companion. A cat who likes to watch her work.      Kiera’s problem is, despite the great working environment, she is unable to paint. She has been unable to ever since her friend’s death. No matter how hard she tries, the desire and drive do not come. Which i

Knives Out

Knives Out Photo of DVD cover taken by Kate Dorsey      I have an odd history with Knives Out . The first time I saw this film was in the theatre. I enjoyed it, but thought I only needed to see it once. I was done. Only, my mom and I kept having questions. When Knives Out was released on DVD, we decided to borrow it and watch it again. Then we watched it for a third and fourth time because we kept coming up with more questions, or one of us would fall asleep. Since then, I’ve watched it even more times. It’s come to the point I feel I have to write about this film. If only to see if it has stuck with anyone else as it has me.      Money and success can cause great problems. It is something author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) knows all too well. His books have made him a very wealthy man. Because of this, his family only wants to be around him for what he can provide. It is a fact Harlan is very aware of. He also knows, because of this, he has power over everyone in his fam

A Night’s Tail: A Magical Cats Mystery by Sofie Kelly

I will warn you; the ending of A Night’s Tail is on the ambiguous side.   Not with who the killer is.   That is declared for certain.   The ambiguity has to do with Kathleen and Marcus’ relationship.   Because, at the end of the book, Kathleen reveals a secret she has been keeping for a long time.   With the secret out, Marcus has to figure out how he’s going to handle it.           It’s an exciting time for Mayville Heights librarian Kathleen Paulson .   Her brother is in town with his band, The Flaming Gerbils.   While Ethan is visiting, he plans on enjoying his sister’s new hometown , as well as her hospitality.      The visit goes awry when one of Ethan’s bandmates, Derek Hanson, is accused of murder.   Ethan is certain Derek is innocent of killing businessman Lewis Wallace, and wants Kathleen to investigate.   She refuses, only wanting to get involved if it is absolutely necessary.   This upsets Ethan, which is why it is an exceptionally good thing Detective Marcus Gordon

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

Quite a lot has happened in three seasons of CSI . Cast changes. Deaths. Cliff hangers. The best thing for me to do is start at the beginning. Or, more accurately, the end.      At the end of season seven, CSI Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) is kidnapped and trapped under a car. In the first episode of season eight, the CSI lab is doing whatever they can to find her. Only, Sara is not relying on them to save her. She manages to free herself and walks through the desert trying to find someone or someplace that can help her. Sara travels a long way, and almost doesn’t make it out of the desert alive. Except the rearview mirror she is carrying reflects the light and is seen. Sara is found just in time.      This experience makes Sara want to leave CSI. After being surrounded by death for so long with her career, she wants to experience some life. To do that, she sets off for parts unknown. Mortal Arts: A Lady Darby Mystery by Anna Lee Huber

There are books I read that make me really glad I live in the time I do.  Going across land in a carriage takes much longer than a car, train, or plane.  If being contained in a plane for a few hours makes you crazy, think what would happen if you were in a stagecoach!  I certainly hope you like the people you’re traveling with.      Lady Keira Darby is traveling to her sister’s home in Edinburgh when her traveling party is waylaid by an old family friend. Michael Dalmay needs help from Keira’s brother-in-law, Lord Philip Cromarty.      You see, Michael is engaged to be married, but the mother of his fiancée is having second thoughts. That is because Michael’s older brother, William, a man who has been missing for years, has suddenly returned.      Missing with location known would probably be the most accurate statement for what happened to William. Because while everyone else thought William was missing, he and Michael’s father knew where he was all along.      William

The Good Ones: A Happily Ever After Romance by Jenn McKinlay

Image
As I’m sure I’ve mentioned many times before, most romance books I get from my mother.    Although I am starting to find some on my own.    Still, it is not a genre I tend to gravitate towards.    Which is why when my mother looked up author Jenn McKinlay , she noticed the Happily Ever After Romance series a lot faster than I did.      Maisy Kelly is making some big changes in her life.    She has quit her professorship because her ex-boyfriend, a man who turned out to be married, stole her job.    Her great-aunt Eloise has died, leaving Maisy in grief.    As an inheritance, Maisy now has a large Victorian house full of books.         When I say a house full of books, I mean FULL.    Books are everywhere.    It is to the point moving around could be a hazard.    And each and every book is a romance.      Maisy’s thought is to turn the house into a romance bookstore.    To help her do this, Maisy hires architect Ryder Copeland, a man who looks like her favorite romance hero.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

For many years I watched CSI on TV.   The problem was I kept missing pieces of storylines.   I figured I would find the episodes I missed eventually, and be able to put all the pieces together.   Then the show stopped airing on channels I had access to.   I was still curious about the storylines, and decided to get the DVDs .   To have everything make sense, I started at the beginning.   So far, I have gone through seven seasons.             Gil Grissom (William Petersen) is the supervisor for the late shift at the Las Vegas Crime Lab.   He and members of his team collect forensic evidence at crime scenes.   This field team consists of Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger), Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan), and Nick Stokes (George Eads).   Not long after the first episode, Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) joins the team. Photo of back DVD cover taken by Kate Dorsey      Back in the lab are the people who process the evidence found.   These people change over the years, but one constant is Gr

Death Is Like a Box of Chocolates: A Chocolate Covered Mystery by Kathy Aarons

Image
The entire time I read Death Is Like a Box of Chocolates I felt I read it before. Yet, by the end of the book, I still couldn’t figure out for certain whether I had or not. Not that it really mattered. Whether I read this book or not, I enjoyed reading it this time.      Chocolatier Michelle Serrano is thrilled to have the renovations done on her book and chocolate shop. Her best friend Erica runs the book side of things, while she runs the chocolate. It is a great situation. The two friends can work together and still do what they each love.      With the shop up and running, Michelle and Erica are working with other local business owners to put together a Memorial Day Weekend festival. It will include the first ever West Riverdale Arts Festival and a Great Fudge Cook-Off. The festival is a lot of work, which always manages to grow when Mayor Gwen Ficks comes around. She loves adding things to the festival plan.      The list of things to do becomes even longer when Michel

Professor T

Image
For a while now, I have been watching the original Professor T. from Belgium on PBS . I came in late to the series, and have missed episodes for one reason or another. I keep hoping I will find the series on DVD , but so far, no luck. That is part of the reason why I was interested when I found out PBS was going to air a British version of the show. It could possibly fill in some holes for me, or it may not do that at all.      DC Lisa Donckers (Emma Naomi) needs help. She is certain a recent rape is connected to another from five years before. Instead of taking her suspicions to her higher-ups, she takes them to her past criminology professor, Jasper Tempest (Ben Miller). Photo of DVD cover taken by Kate Dorsey      Despite what Lisa presents to him, Professor T is reluctant to help. Not because he thinks Lisa is wrong, but because he is uninterested.      Professor T is a man who walks around with rubber gloves on his hands, frequently sanitizes, and has very poor social skills

Why Not Tonight: Happily Inc Book #3 by Susan Mallery

Image
While Why Not Tonight may be the third book in the Happily Inc series, it is not the third story. There is a short story or novella that falls between Second Chance Girl and this one. I haven’t read it yet, but that did not keep me from enjoying this book.      If artist Ronan Mitchell hadn’t left his cell phone at work, probably none of what did happen would have happened. Art gallery office manager Natalie Kaleta never would have gotten stuck at his house, and Ronan never would have fallen in love.      But Ronan did leave his cell phone, and Natalie did get stuck at his house. And yes, Ronan fell in love.            Known for going missing when he is in one of his moods, Ronan is very surprised to find Natalie on his doorstep. Ronan hasn’t communicated with anyone for days, and Natalie has come up to his mountain home to make sure he is alright. She came during a severe storm. Her car is totaled. The roads are blocked. Natalie’s only option is to stay with Ronan unt
