Property Brothers
A lot of home renovation shows absolutely horrify me. I cannot believe some of the things home owners and designers do to the houses. Then there is the show with Mike Holmes where he fixes the messes of what contractors have done. That one is so scary I think its episodes should be shown as Halloween specials. I have that hard of a time watching it. However, there is one home renovation show I do not struggle to watch, at least most of the time. Property Brothers is different from the others. They are good at what they do and they try to do it right.
Drew
and Jonathan Scott are brothers who help people get their dream home with a
smaller budget. It just takes some
renovations. First Drew takes the buyers
to a completed home that has everything they want. This is never in the price range. Once they reveal the cost of the home, Drew
and Jonathan work to convince the buyers a fixer upper house is the way to go. They visit different houses for sale and two
are chosen for Jonathan to create designs.
The buyers choose a home and design and work with Drew to get the house
at a price where they can afford the renovations. Once they have the house, Jonathan begins the
renovations and a finished home with happy buyers is the result.
This may all
seem simple, but things do not always go smoothly. Sometimes the buyers have to pay more than
they planned for the house and the renovations have to be altered. Then there are the problems discovered while
renovating. I do not know how some of
these things are not detected by an inspector beforehand, but they are
not. Fixing the situation can get quite
costly. Somehow Jonathan always manages
to make things work out. Sometimes the
design or materials have to change, but he makes it seem as though the end
result was the plan all along.
As
much as I like this show, and am usually just fine watching it, I do have my
flip out moments. When character pieces
are taken out to create open concepts or wood is painted, I admit, I sometimes
hide. I will not even start on the
granite discussion. Yes, I know what
they are doing is what the buyer asked for, but I cannot help my cringing. Some things I feel should not be changed. It is to the point where at times I cheer for
houses to not be chosen because I do not want it, in my opinion, to be destroyed.
Despite
my anxieties, I do really like this show.
As I said, it is much better than so many of the others. A lot of this has to do with Drew and
Jonathan themselves. They have a great
respect for their work. While I may not
always agree with what they do, the end result is beautiful. More important, it is also done
correctly. They do not do anything loosely. If there is a problem, they make sure it is
handled properly and what is best for the home owner. Not everyone does that.
Although the time frame for renovations is a little suspect for normal people, I think this show has a great concept. It is not necessary to go bankrupt in order to have a dream home. Renovations are not easy, but they can make your house into whatever you want it to be.
