2013 Tony Awards

I cannot believe I almost forgot to watch the Tony Awards this year.  For weeks I had been looking forward to the awards show.  But something happened on Friday that made it completely slip my mind.  Maybe I would have remembered again by the time they aired Sunday night.  Or maybe not.  Thankfully the Chicago Tribune mentioned the upcoming show (or was it the TV magazine?) and I was reminded.  I was so concerned I would forget again that I wrote the show down on my calendar.  The moment the festivities started I was so happy I did not miss it.
Neil Patrick Harris was once again the host.  In my opinion, he did a fantastic job.  Mr. Harris is really good at what he does.  He reminds me of the greatness of Billy Crystal at the Oscars.  Mr. Harris’s song and dance numbers are really good.  Throughout the show he is also funny without being insulting.  That is a really hard combination to find lately.  Maybe Mr. Harris should host the Oscars.
Mr. Harris was not the only good part of the show.  Every year I love seeing the performances of the musicals.  This year I was especially excited because I finally got to see a piece from Kinky Boots.  I really wanted to see it when it was in Chicago, but I do not think there was a ticket to be had.  Since I do not believe I am going to New York any time soon, the Tonys let me see at least a small part of the show.
The Tonys also exposed me to shows I did not know about at all.  Usually I hear about the musicals, but only occasionally do I find out about the plays.  There were so many big names in the plays.  Tom Hanks, Judith Light, and Tony Shalhoub are just some that were nominated for awards (Judith Light also won).  When clips from the various productions were shown, there were so many other actors I knew.  Unfortunately, the plays do not usually tour.  Even if they did, and the shows came to the Midwest, I do not think the big names would come with it.  But you never know; I may be surprised.
One of the greatest moments of the night was when Cicely Tyson won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.  She has been around for so long in the acting world, it was wonderful to see her acknowledged for her work on the stage.  Unfortunately the producers did have to cut Ms. Tyson’s acceptance speech a bit, but she appeared to understand.  It seemed as though she had already been allowed to run over the allotted time.  I do not think anyone minded, except for maybe the advertisers.
If I had missed the Tony Awards I would have been so disappointed. It was a great show, as usual. Too bad I have to wait a year until the next one.
