My Big Fat Geek Wedding
There is something about watching a wedding come together that is absolutely fascinating. I am not talking about the fighting, the tears, or the mishaps. What I like to see is the dress being chosen, where the flowers came from, and how the location is transformed. The drama can go somewhere else. I want to see the creation of the wedding from start to finish. My Big Fat Geek Wedding, a recent Premiere Event on Syfy, did this, but with a twist. The wedding that was held was not traditional, it was based on fantasy.
Mandie
Bettencourt and Julian Roman want a wedding that involves their love of
fantasy. They are looking to have a
theme of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones but are having a
hard time finding a wedding planner willing to do it. This is where Kristin Banta comes in. An experienced wedding planner, Ms. Banta is
ready to take on the challenge Mandie and Julian have put before her. While Lord of the Rings and Game of
Thrones are not exactly her area of expertise, she enlists the help of
others, including an expert in theme events and a fantasy dress designer.
With
a wedding theme this specific, every detail must be as accurate as
possible. Nothing can be overlooked, not
even the style of the chairs. It takes a
lot of time and effort, but in the end Ms. Banta pulls everything together and
creates the wedding of Mandie’s and Julian’s dreams.
Some
of the things Ms. Banta is able to do for this wedding is really incredible. First off, everyone, including all the
guests, is in costume. Then there is a
swordfight that the groom participates in.
After this a hawk swoops in with their wedding rings. That is just the ceremony. During the reception there is a stilt walker
and a fire twirler. Oh, and a dragon shows
up. These are definitely not things one
would find at a traditional wedding but it fit the bride and groom perfectly.
As
much as I liked watching the wedding get put together, I also enjoyed watching
the parents. The ones we saw the most
were Mandie’s father and stepmother.
Even though they did not understand the theme (Mandie’s stepmother asked
for a dictionary during the dress selection), they were very supportive of what
Mandie wanted to do. At first her father
was reluctant to wear a costume, but once he saw how much it meant to his
daughter, he put one on and had a great time.
He also mentioned Mandie’s deceased mother during his toast. That was a very special moment for Mandie and
it again showed a father’s love for his daughter.
Julian’s
mother was not shown as much, but when she was it was easy to see how much she
loved her son. After her introduction
Julian explained how his mother always supported him with his interests and how
much that meant to him. I think all
these parents are a great example of people who love their children for who
they are and no matter what their interests may be.
So
far only one episode of My Big Fat Geek Wedding has been aired. It is my understanding that as a Premiere
Event Syfy is trying to figure out how the viewers like the show and whether or
not they should release more episodes.
If you like the show you are supposed to go to the Syfy website and let
them know. The episode can also be
watched on the website.
I really liked
watching this wedding come together, especially since there was very little
drama. It would be great if more
episodes were aired because then I would be able to see what other kinds of
themes people come up with. I’m not sure
when the decision to keep or not keep My Big Fat Geek Wedding will be
made, but I hope the decision will be to keep and new episodes will be released
soon.
