Property Brothers at Home
After watching Jonathan and Drew
Scott work on other people’s houses for the past few years, I was really
interested to see what they would do to their own house. Now I know.
Property Brothers at Home shows the renovations Jonathan and Drew
did to the house they share in Las Vegas.
As they work they come across unpleasant surprises just as they do on
their other shows, Property Brothers and Buying and Selling. They also have to deal with difficult home
owners; each other. Jonathan and Drew definitely
do not always agree about what and on how things should be done. It never gets too heated between the two
brothers, but you can tell when one is driving the other crazy.
Watching the interactions
between the two brothers is quite fascinating.
On the other shows only a little of their personalities get to come
out. This is especially true of Drew who
spends most of his time in business mode.
Jonathan gets the opportunity to show some of his personality during the
renovations, but he stays businesslike a lot as well. Without home owners other than themselves to
deal with, the brothers are able to show more of their quirks and how they
interact with each other. Everything
becomes even more interesting when their older brother JD comes into the
picture. He pops in every once in awhile
as the renovations are being done. When
I watch JD I can tell he’s the older brother.
His behavior is one of a person who has spent most of his life dealing
with the antics of his two younger brothers.
There is more than once that I felt JD was mentally shaking his head at
something one or both of his brothers did.
While
I find the personalities and relationships interesting, the reason I’m really
watching the show is to see the renovation.
It is incredible how differently they treat their house versus others’. On Property Brothers, Jonathan usually
helps the home owners destroy cabinets, countertops, and most of whatever else
is being removed. This sends me through
the roof. So many of these items could
be donated or repurposed in some way.
They do not need to be destroyed just for the sake of destruction. (I must say here that Jonathan is not the
only person who does this. Most of the
home renovation shows do, driving me absolutely crazy in the process.) In Jonathan’s own home, however, he and Drew
take care with everything in the house.
If they’re not going to keep something, they remove it carefully and
keep it in good condition for donation.
Another thing the brothers didn’t do was immediately paint their
cabinets. It seems like every time
Jonathan walks into a house on Buying and Selling he paints wood
cabinets white. The wood molding and
trim gets painted on Property Brothers.
I grit my teeth a lot during these moments. On Property Brothers at Home I didn’t
have to! While the cabinets were
eventually painted, they were done with a wood grain effect to give an
appearance of actual wood. I also don’t
think the cabinets were made of hardwood (they kept talking about veneers) so
seeing them painted was not such a thing for me. The point is, unlike usual, painting was not
the immediate solution for changing how the cabinets looked in the kitchen.
The
entire show isn’t all about work. There
is fun too. In the first episode Jonathan
and Drew were fitted for custom-made suits of armor to be put on display in
their living room. By the end of the
episode the completed suits arrived. It
must have been thrilling to try them on.
To have your own personal suit of armor is not something everyone can
claim.
Since there is only one property to renovate, I’m not sure how long this series is going to last. I thought I read somewhere that there will be four episodes, but don’t quote me on that. It would be great if there were more episodes because I am finding myself enjoying this show more than I do the others. I like being able to see more of whom Jonathan and Drew truly are. When JD gets into the picture I enjoy the show even more. He adds another element that is never seen in the other shows because he’s not on them. I’m hoping when this series ends another show will be thought of that all three brothers can do together.
