Just Write

This is a cute movie.  A light-hearted, enjoyable, cute movie.  Some may scoff at a movie such as this, but sometimes a person needs something that doesn’t make you think too hard.  Instead of thinking about the complex motivations behind the characters’ actions, with a movie like Just Write, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy.
Harold (Jeremy Piven) is a Hollywood tour guide.  He drives one of the trolleys that show tourists stars’ homes.  It is his dream job and something he has wanted to do his entire life.  While Harold is happy with his life, his family and friends around him believe he should be something more.  It isn’t until Harold meets an actress he admires that he starts to think the same.
Amanda Clark (Sherilyn Fenn) is charmed by Harold when he comes up to talk to her.  She mistakes him for a screenwriter which Harold does not correct because he does not expect to ever see Amanda again.  Then Amanda puts Harold in an odd predicament.  She asks for Harold’s help on a screenplay she is considering.  Something about it is bothering her.  She wants Harold to take a look at it and give his opinion.
Unable to refuse, Harold agrees to look over the screenplay.  As Harold and Amanda work on the screenplay together, they become close.  Harold tries to correct Amanda’s assumption that he is a screenwriter, but she won’t hear it.  To make matters worse, every industry person they encounter claims they know who Harold is and love his work.  Eventually Harold decides that the only way to keep the charade going is to actually write a screenplay.  He must do this before Amanda finds out the truth and everything falls apart.
I absolutely adored Harold.  He was such a sweet, good man.  Yes, he was awkward, but in an endearing way.  Amanda was a really nice person, which made it easy to cheer for the two to get together.  She was a genuine person and wanted good people in her life.  Unfortunately the same could not be said for all the people around her.  They mostly worried about their careers and who they could charm into doing their bidding.  That’s why it’s so great Amanda found Harold, even if there was that initial misunderstanding.  He had good people around him, although a little quirky, and was very happy simply being himself.
Since this movie is from the late ‘90s, and possibly not well known, I don’t know how easy it will be to find. I really hope people are able to find this movie because it is definitely worth watching. It may not have won any Oscars, but this movie is sweet and funny, and I would hate to see it get lost to history.
