Some Enchanted Éclair: A Magical Bakery Mystery by Bailey Cates

Katie Lightfoot’s life in Savannah keeps getting more and more mysterious.  So much magic is happening all around that I would not be surprised if it were discovered nearly everyone in town had one magical power or another.  With another person to add to the list of those with magical powers, it may be only a matter of time before the list includes everyone.
It’s movie making time in Savannah.  A film crew is in town and many of Katie’s friends and family are somehow involved.  Katie isn’t, which is fine by her, but being able to stay away from the film set does not last long.  Simon Knapp, the film’s production coordinator, has just fired the caterer and he needs a new one now.  Brought into the Honeybee Bakery by one of Katie’s friends, Simon wants the bakery to cater for the film that day and possibly for the entire week.  Despite the great amount of work this would create, and the rearrangement of their schedule, Katie and her Aunt Lucy agree to do the catering.  Unfortunately, someone else doesn’t want them to.
On Katie’s first day on the job, Simon is found dead.  A psychic connected to one of the stars of the film tells Katie she will be the one to solve the murder.  Rattled at having almost passed out over the sight of the body, and not truly knowing who this psychic is, Katie’s mind is not exactly on investigating.  But, as usual, it gets there.
While I’m sure Katie has gotten used to facing resistance during her investigations, I don’t think she every expected the flat-out animosity she receives with this one.  Althea Cole, the star of the film, has it out for Katie, and Katie has zero idea why.  It’s not as though they know each other, and the only thing they have in common is Katie’s friend Steve.  To make matters even more curious, Althea seems to be doing everything in her power to impede Katie’s investigation.  One can only stop to wonder why.
I mentioned a new person being discovered as having magical powers.  That person is Katie’s boyfriend, Declan.  This discovery comes out of the blue and as quite a surprise to everyone, including Declan himself.  He never knew he was a medium who could channel spirits.  This realization takes a while to settle in for Declan.  I’m not sure it even fully has by the end of the book.  As Declan was someone who was a bit on the skeptical side about Katie’s powers, it will be interesting to see how this new storyline with him develops.
I for one am not sure how I feel about this development with Declan.  He was kind of sarcastic about Katie’s powers before, but now that he has his own, Declan has gotten somewhat testy.  I understand he needs some adjustment time to deal with everything, but if he doesn’t get through it soon, and keeps getting cranky with Katie, I’m going to have to change my vote as to who I think Katie should end up with.
