Oh Danny Boy: A Molly Murphy Mystery by Rhys Bowen

I’m really not sure why I’m supposed to cheer for Molly and Daniel to get together.  Daniel jerks Molly around, doesn’t treat her well, then tries to control her.  After seeing him do all that, I’m supposed to want their relationship to work out?  I don’t think so.
Captain Daniel Sullivan is in trouble.  He’s been arrested for accepting a bribe from a gang.  An action all those who truly know him know he would never do.  Yet, despite his stellar reputation, there is really only one person who will go out and clear his name.  That person is private investigator Molly Murphy.
Molly is not exactly thrilled to be helping Daniel.  In fact, she has been doing her best to avoid him ever since their encounter on another one of her cases.  An encounter which has left her expecting his child.
Before Molly even knows about the child, she agrees to help Daniel.  Despite how angry she is over his treatment of her (he still had a fiancĂ©e when they got together), Molly does care about him and does not want Daniel to be in jail.

While working on Daniel’s case, Molly gets a surprise second one.  Daniel’s former fiancĂ©e, Arabella, wants Molly to find her friend.  It appears Letitia Blackwell has run off with a young man, but Arabella isn’t so sure.  That’s why she wants Molly to look into the disappearance.
What Molly finds is Letitia’s disappearance may be part of an even bigger situation.  Many other young women are also missing.  What’s most concerning is these disappearances may be connected to the murders of the East Side Ripper.
I really liked the addition of police matron Sabella Goodwin in this book.  She worked really well with Molly, and I could see her getting along with Molly’s friends, Sid and Gus.  While it was unclear as to whether Sabella will return in future books, I certainly hope she does.
As for Daniel, he’s as irritating as usual.  He reaches out to Molly for help, then gets upset when she does what she needs to in order to help.  Even in jail Daniel sends mixed messages and tries to control Molly’s life.
Again, why am I supposed to cheer for these two to be together?  The more I read, the harder time I have figuring that out.
