A Night’s Tail: A Magical Cats Mystery by Sofie Kelly
I will warn you; the ending of A Night’s Tail is on the ambiguous side. Not with who the killer is. That is declared for certain. The ambiguity has to do with Kathleen and Marcus’ relationship. Because, at the end of the book, Kathleen reveals a secret she has been keeping for a long time. With the secret out, Marcus has to figure out how he’s going to handle it.
It’s an exciting time for Mayville Heights librarian Kathleen Paulson. Her brother is in town with his band, The Flaming Gerbils. While Ethan is visiting, he plans on enjoying his sister’s new hometown, as well as her hospitality.
The
visit goes awry when one of Ethan’s bandmates, Derek Hanson, is accused of
murder. Ethan is certain Derek is
innocent of killing businessman Lewis Wallace, and wants Kathleen to
investigate. She refuses, only wanting
to get involved if it is absolutely necessary.
This upsets Ethan, which is why it is an exceptionally good thing
Detective Marcus Gordon is able to prove Derek’s alibi.
Even
though Derek’s name is cleared, Kathleen still can’t shake the case. She wants to know who actually did kill Lewis
Wallace. While seemingly new to town, he
had a lot of hidden connections to Mayville Heights. Connections that may have gotten him killed.
Kathleen,
as usual, does end up working the case.
It is after the murder is solved and everything is wrapped up that she
reveals her secret to Marcus.
The
secret is her cats are magical. One can
walk through walls. The other has the
ability to disappear. Marcus has a cat
who can disappear too. Something he does
not realize is happening, and is unable to fully understand. Which is why the ending of this book is on
the ambiguous side. It ends with Marcus
trying to get a handle on what he has been told. He also struggles with the fact Kathleen has
kept the information from him for so long.
I
have a feeling once Marcus gets over his initial shock, things will work out
for him and Kathleen. At least I
certainly hope they do. Their
relationship has lasted through many books.
I would hate to see it end because of magical cats.
As
I was reading, I enjoyed learning about Ethan.
Even if he could be bratty at times.
Kathleen’s family is mentioned a lot through the series, and it is
always nice to see one or more come to town.
I’m hoping this continues as the series goes on, as well as a visit from
the long-time friend Kathleen sometimes calls.
The family visits let us know more of who Kathleen is, and what her life
was like before she came to Mayville Heights.
