All About Me!: My Remarkable Life in Show Business by Mel Brooks

Image
All About Me! Photo of book cover taken by Kate Dorsey      Mel Brooks movies were introduced to me at a young age. With Spaceballs , to be exact. Then Robin Hood: Men in Tights . Somewhere along the line I saw Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles for the first time. All funny movies in their own way. All Mel Brooks.      When I put All About Me! on the library reserve list, it was the behind the scenes of the films Mr. Brooks has created I wanted to know about. I understood what I was reserving was an autobiography and there would be other elements to the book besides the films. What I didn’t expect was there would be so many other elements. Some I found interesting and read the entire chapter. Others did not keep my attention and I ended up skimming. At first, I was going to skip these chapters altogether, until I discovered there were small stories in them I wanted to read about. One being Mr. Brooks’s relationship with Cary Grant. That was a sto...

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Photo of DVD cover taken by Kate Dorsey      Well, I can see why CSI ended when it did. The episodes from the last two seasons were not as good as the seasons before. There was also a lot of lack of justice. Especially at the end of season fourteen. There were several episodes in a row where justice was either not done, or done by half. We see this far too often in real life. To see it in a work of fiction makes the show very frustrating to watch.      At the end of season thirteen , CSI Morgan Brody (Elisabeth Harnois) went missing while undercover. The start of season fourteen has Morgan able to escape her captor, barely. Once she does, she is shot be a person she trusted, and shouldn’t have.      After this event, the only continuing storyline for the entire season is with Detective Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle). His daughter is put away for murder, and he must figure out how he can still be there for her....

The Chef-to-Go Mysteries by Denise Swanson

I am always looking for a new mystery series to read. That is why when I find a premise or title I like, I give the series a try. This time it was the title Leave No Scone Unturned I found intriguing. But, as so often happens, I discovered this book was not the first in its series. Something I figured out after I brought it home from the library . I then had to rush out and get the first book. Once I had that one home, I read both books very quickly.      Dani Sloan’s life is up in the air. She lives in an apartment building full of college students. Her HR job is over after leaving it because of an ethics issue; plus, the fact she simply did not like it. And she has broken up with her boyfriend after discovering he is engaged to another woman.      All this going on in her life is why Dani finds it such a relief when she learns she has inherited a mansion from one of her grandmother’s friends, Geraldine Cook. Geraldine is a woman D...

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Photo of DVD cover taken by Kate Dorsey      There are some films and series that just stick with me. The Hobbit Trilogy is one of them.      In many ways, why I am stuck on The Hobbit doesn’t make sense. I’m not a big fantasy person. I tried to read both the book and the graphic novel, unable to finish either one. So how can I watch this trilogy over and over again? Well, a lot of good-looking men help. But I have a feeling it has more to do with the story.                   Bilbo Baggins ( Martin Freeman ) is perfectly happy living a quiet life in the Shire. It is what he wants to do for the rest of his life. Or so he thinks.      The wizard Gandalf the Grey ( Ian McKellen ) makes Bilbo question what he really wants. He shows up out of the blue, looking for his adventurous friend from years before. There is a mission Gan...
