A solved case unsolved

Another vagrant has been found killed in a doorway. With someone already in the asylum for the other three dead vagrant men, DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) has to wonder if he has a copycat on his hands or if they have charged the wrong man with the crime. Some of the details of the first deaths were left out of the press, yet they are present with this most recent murder. Geordie believes they have punished the wrong man.

The situation becomes worse when the man held responsible for the first three murders, Robin Fellows (Jeremy Ang Jones), kills himself. He does this after a visit from his horribly cold professor, Rowena King (Edith Larson), which makes Geordie wonder what happened in that meeting.

Professor King barely bats an eye when Geordie and Reverend Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) tell her about Robin’s suicide. All she does is talk about how he and the homeless men are better off dead. She argues no one can truly change and their lives are better off being over with. With an attitude like this is, it is no surprise Professor King gets attacked by the real culprit later.

No matter how horrified Geordie and Will are about the professor’s views, they are secondary to the fact the real culprit is still at large. Fortunately, Geordie’s boss, DCI Elliott Wallace (Michael D. Xavier), has a change of heart about the case. Previously, Wallace deemed these vagrant deaths unimportant. Now he tells Geordie to do whatever he has to in order to arrest the true murderer.

Will’s life is in danger

Geordie is at risk of finding the guilty part too late, though. The true person responsible for the vagrant deaths has cornered Will and stabbed him. He is in the vicarage with Will when Geordie’s niece, Bonnie Evans (Charlotte Ritchie), comes around.

Through the mail slot Bonnie tells Will she has rethought the Maya (Ellora Torchia) situation. She is willing to put what she saw happen between Will and Maya in the past and stay in town, if that is what Will wants. The murderer keeps Will from responding.

Mrs. C. goes in for surgery

At the same time, vicarage housekeeper, Mrs. C. (Tessa Peake-Jones), is at the hospital preparing for surgery. Will is supposed to be there with her, and Mrs. C. is questioning his absence. Former curate, Leonard Finch (Al Weaver), says Will probably got caught up in something, as he often does. This is true this time as well, just not in the way they think.

Leonard; his partner, Daniel Marlowe (Oliver Dimsdale); and Mrs. C.’s husband, Jack Chapman (Nick Brimble); all insist on praying before Mrs. C.’s surgery. She is still mad at God and does not want this, but this is something the others want to do. Even Daniel and Jack want to, despite neither being religious. Whether the prayers helped or not is up for opinion. But they certainly did not hurt. Mrs. C. makes it through her surgery just fine.

Leonard’s changing passion

After the surgery, it is discovered Leonard is struggling with running his café. The cafe is becoming popular, but Leonard is unfulfilled. He worked with Geordie on the vagrant case when they caught Robin, and now he wants to work with the homeless instead of running the café. He is worried about upsetting Mrs. C. and Jack with these thoughts since they were the ones who put up the money for the business.

Leonard needn’t have worried. Jack is so relieved Mrs. C. is safely through her surgery that he decides to let go of the café. He is no longer going to look for a return on his investment. All he wants is for Leonard to be happy. He gives Leonard permission to use the café space however he chooses.

All is well

Everyone gets a happy ending when this season ends. Happy to the point this could have easily been the final season of Grantchester.

I have heard an eighth season is in the works, which makes me happy. Another season means more great one-liners from Geordie. There will be clever banter between Geordie and Will. Police secretary Miss Scott (Melissa Johns) will again prove she is smarter and more capable than anyone she works with. Leonard and Daniel will continue to have a sweet, supportive relationship. At least that is what I want to see in the eighth season, along with good mysteries.

What I don’t want to see is Geordie’s marriage with Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) struggle again. They have been through enough. Please leave their relationship alone!

Actually, leave all the relationships alone. That doesn’t mean there can’t be conflict to work through, but no separations or affairs. Nothing like that, please. Everyone is happy where they are and with who they are with at the moment. It would be nice to see that stick for a while.
