The Incredible Theft

Agatha Christie’s Poirot

Series 1

“The Incredible Theft"

A man in a white hat and coat and has a mustache looks at the camera.
David Suchet as Hercule Poirot

A penguin pool is not the usual place to rendezvous with a client, but that is where Hercule Poirot has agreed to meet an anonymous caller. The problem is, the woman who called does not abide by the meeting rules she came up with. That’s not exactly the way to get on Poirot’s good side, let me tell you.

Lady Mayfield finally reveals her concerns

The woman, Lady Margaret Mayfield, does end up meeting with Poirot in person. She tells him she is worried about her husband, Lord Mayfield, and a woman with German sympathies, Mrs. Vanderlyn. Needing to be nearer the concern, Poirot agrees to go to the Mayfield estate were both Mayfield and Mrs. Vanderlyn will be.

Poirot and Hastings investigate

Poirot takes his friend Captain Hastings with him to Mayfield. Hastings, however, is not allowed to stay at the estate. He must stay at a local pub. Interestingly enough, Hastings ends up sharing a room with Chief Inspector Japp, who is already in town. This is a great surprise to Hastings and Poirot.

At the estate, important papers go missing. They are papers that are a matter of national security. Mrs. Vanderlyn is believed to be the thief. Poirot believes her to be innocent.

Lord Mayfield was not as oblivious as his wife thought

The interesting thing is, Lady Mayfield was very worried about her husband and Mrs. Vanderlyn, but in truth he was already suspicious of her. He had set a trap for Mrs. Vanderlyn, which did not go well. To help, another guest, Sir George Carrington, invited Japp down to be around if an arrest needed to be made. That is why Japp is in town.

A very confusing episode

Overall, this episode consists of a very muddled situation that ends up with Hastings and Poirot stealing a cop car in order to chase down Mrs. Vanderlyn.

Could Hastings and Miss Lemon be a match?

In the meantime, Hastings is having women problems, again. Poirot instructs Hastings on patent leather care, even though that is probably the furthest thing from Hastings’s mind.

Poirot also decides to tease his poor secretary, Miss Lemon about something. In this instance, Hastings sticks up for Miss Lemon.

You know, I wonder what Hastings’s true feelings are for Miss Lemon. They always seem to be slightly more than friendship. But I suspect Miss Lemon truly loves Poirot, so I guess it will never work out with Hastings.
