My Current Interest

              I’ve probably said this before, but I really am starting to wonder about small fictional towns.   So many murders happen in them!   In Death Overdue , the first book in the Haunted Library mystery series, a murder has occurred before the book even starts, a long time before the main character ever moves to town.   Then another one happens not long after she arrives.   For a small town, I would think that would be a lot of murder.                 Carrie Singleton is not sure about staying and living in the town of Clover Ridge.   She’s spent her adult life moving from town to town, and now that she has been in Clover Ridge for a little while, she feels it is time to move on again.   The problem is, she has just been offered the job of Head of Programs and Events at the library.   It is a good job that her aunt and uncle c...

              I’m really starting to think I have a problem with movie and TV trailers.   All too often I watch a trailer and come away either completely turned off or with zero interest in what I have just seen.   Then someone else wants to see what I have made my mind up about, or I come across it by accident, and I find I really like what I rejected when I saw the trailer.   This is exactly what happened with the movie The DUFF .   All the commercials I saw made it seem as though The DUFF was going to be a cruel, depressing film.   Then when I watched it, I found that this movie was clever, funny, and empowering for those who dare to be different.                 Bianca Piper (Mae Whitman) is going through high school just fine hanging out with her two best friends, Jess (Skyler Samuels) and Casey (Bianca Santos).   Yes, her friends ge...

             I should have been working.   There was definitely work for me to do.   Yet, all I wanted to do was read.   So, that is what I did.                 Life is going well for Lily Ivory .   Her vintage clothing business is successful.   The relationship she has with her boyfriend, Sailor, is going well.   And her witch’s familiar, Oscar, has returned home.   All these good things happening is why Lily is not exactly pleased when her friend, Inspector Carlos Romero, asks for her help.   He says he only wants Lily to look into the activity occurring at a local store, but you know that once Lily is involved, she cannot leave a situation alone at that.                 It’s a curandera shop that Inspector Romero wants Lily to look into.   What...

              Victoria and Albert.   Where would their marriage be if it weren’t for Ernst?   I don’t know how many times this man has come to the rescue during times of strife in their marriage.   He does this, all while struggling with a love of his own.                 Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman) has just had her first child, a child everyone demanded she have, especially if it had been a boy.   Which it wasn't.  You would think people would be happy now and let Victoria rule as she deems fit.   That is not at all the case.   While Victoria is perfectly ready to go back to work, everyone arounds her expects Victoria to stay away.   They believe she should take more time to recover from her pregnancy and spend time in the nursery.   In fact, if Victoria were to do that for the rest of her life, the men around her would ...

          There are times where it feels really good to go back to a familiar series.   You don’t have to learn much about the past lives of the characters, because you already know it from reading the previous books.   Instead, you can concentrate on what is going on right now in the current story and enjoy what is happening in front of you.   When I started Faux Paw , I found it so nice to curl up with characters I knew.   That familiarity is probably why I read this book as fast as I did.                                   Librarian Kathleen Paulson has not exactly found things to be easy at the library lately.   The library itself is fine.   It’s the art exhibit that’s being set up in the library that is the problem.   The curator of the exhibit, Margo Walsh, keeps...

          It’s about every four years that I actually pay attention to soccer (or football, depending on what part of the would you are from).   That’s because every four years the FIFA World Cup is being played.   The other years I watch a game here and there, but it’s the World Cup that I pay attention to.   Not that I actually understand what’s going on most of the time, but I still like to watch.                        Pretty much the main thing I understand is that when the ball goes over the goal line a goal is scored.   Most of the time.   There are occasions where the goal does not count, such as when a player is offsides.   What that means exactly, I don’t know.   Every time I think I understand what offsides means, it turns out I don’t.   I’ve had it explained to me in terms of hockey, as well.  ...

             Sometimes what I need is a nice cozy book to read.   One where there is a mystery, but nothing too deep.   Set in a place where none of the characters are evil, and most everyone gets along.   Yes, some days that is exactly the type of book I need.                     It’s winter, and everything seems to be going right in librarian Kathleen Paulson’s world.   She’s happily together with her love interest, Marcus.   Her new contract with the Mayville Heights library has been signed.   All her friends are doing good things with their lives and are ecstatic that Kathleen is staying in town.   On top of all this are Kathleen’s magical cats, Owen and Hercules.   They may drive Kathleen crazy at times, but she loves them dearly anyways.            ...
