Buying and Selling
The Scott brothers are back! In their show, Buying and Selling, Drew and Jonathan Scott, also known as The Property Brothers, concentrate on selling one house and purchasing another. There is still a renovation and house hunting, but the objective of each is a little different than in the show Property Brothers.
At
the beginning of each Buying and Selling episode, the Scott brothers go
into a home and tell the owners what needs to be changed in order to sell their
house. This does not usually go over
well. The owners tend to take what is
said quite personally. To be fair, Drew
and Jonathan can get a tad vicious in this part, so I can see why the owners
get upset. I understand the need for the
brothers to be honest, but there are times when I question the tact. Throwing a quilt into the hallway like it is
garbage, as is what happened in one episode, is going too far and something I
still have not fully forgiven Jonathan for.
Something may have happened off camera to create the hostility that led
to this event, but that does not make it acceptable. Thankfully, moments like these are rare on
the show, which is why I keep watching.
Once
Drew and Jonathan go through the house and give their evaluation, they tell the
home owners what they feel the house is worth.
This is sometimes a worse reaction than the ones involving the changes
of the home. The owners always think
their house is worth more than the brothers say it is.
After
this tense moment, Jonathan’s skills and expertise are featured. He comes up with a design to increase the
home’s value. There is always a
renovation involved, but nothing to the scale of what he does on Property
Brothers. Everything Jonathan does
is much simpler, but it helps make the house more inviting and intriguing to
prospective buyers.
While
Jonathan does the renovations, Drew takes the home owners house hunting. They are looking for a house that is ready to
be moved into. This can be harder than
finding a house to renovate. I do not
envy Drew as he deals with this part of the show. The smallest things can make the house
hunters not want to buy a house. For
some, if they had their way, I think they would search for a house
forever. Fortunately they have Drew who
can see when there will not be any more progress and pushes for a decision to
be made. Once they decide on which house
they would like to buy, Drew works to get them their new home.
At
the existing house, Jonathan has by this point finished the renovations. Drew puts the house up for sale and the open
houses begin. The home owners must keep
the house clean in order for it to be show ready at all times. This can be a struggle and causes a lot of
anxiety as the home owners do still have a life to live. But with Drew’s push to sell the house and
Jonathan’s renovations and staging, it does not seem as though they struggle
for long. The house is always sold and
the home owners are able to move onto the next part of their lives.
Even
though there are some moments, as I mentioned before, that I do not like, I
love watching this show. It fascinates
me to see how a small renovation can change a house so completely and bring the
value up a great deal. I also look
forward to seeing the houses Drew has chosen to show. Each house is different and I find it really
interesting to see what people have done in their homes.
No
matter what Drew and Jonathan Scott encounter, they always come out
successfully in the end. While I may
like Property Brothers a little better than Buying and Selling
for the simple reason of I love seeing how renovations are done, I cannot say
one show is better than the other in quality.
The brothers always do a great job, and no matter which show I am
watching, I want to see what they will do next.
