Last Wool and Testament: A Haunted Yarn Shop Mystery by Molly MacRae
I have found a new mystery series to read! This may only be thrilling to me, but that is okay. I get excited about books, especially when it is a series. Not that I exactly need a new series to read. This one has so many elements I love that I was really excited when I picked the first book, Last Wool and Testament, up from the library. Not only is there a mystery, but the book also has a ghost as well as a fiber and fabric shop. All things that are right up my alley.
Kath
has returned to Blue Plum, Tennessee to attend her grandmother’s, Ivy's, funeral
and clean up Ivy’s affairs. One of the
things she must figure out what to do with is the fiber and fabric shop Ivy
owned, the Weaver’s Cat. But the shop is
not the first thing on Kath’s mind. She
is most concerned with going through Ivy’s house. The problem is when Kath goes to the house,
she finds it locked and with a note claiming Ivy owes money in rent. Kath does not understand this as she always
knew the house to belong to Ivy. She has
to figure out what is going on.
First,
Kath must find a place to stay. With the
house locked, she does not have anywhere to go.
Thankfully Kath is able to get in contact with one of Ivy’s friends,
Ruth, and she moves into a cabin on the grounds of a charity. Kath is happy to stay in
the cabin, at first. After arriving she
discovers that the man who lived there before, Emmett, was murdered in the
cabin, and that Ivy is a suspect. Then
Kath comes across a female ghost. Things
are not going well for Kath.
She
does manage to get through the night, but Kath’s problems to do not end there. In an effort to figure out what is going on
with the house, Kath deals with so much more than she ever thought she
would. There is a break in and a murder
at Ivy’s house. A blackmail scandal
that cannot be spoken about too loudly is revealed. On top of that, one of Ivy’s employees is
found dead. Oh, and Kath gets a phone
call letting her know she lost her job.
That is a lot for one person to take.
Fortunately, Kath has Ivy’s friends, members of a dedicated fiber group,
and a ghost to help her unravel the truth.
This
is the first book in awhile that I have wanted to just keep reading. While I did peg the culprit early on, I
wanted to keep reading to see what else was going to happen and to find out if
I was right about the guilty party. The
only bad part was the Spivey twins, Ivy’s busybody cousins. I could have really done without them. For me it would be great if they went away in
the future books. The other characters
were great and I am interested to see what happens to them all. I especially want to know how the
relationship between Kath and Deputy Cole Dunbar is going to unfold. Right now there is animosity, but I do not
believe that will remain. Maybe I am
wrong, but I will have to read to find out.
I look forward to it.
