Scream 3

One would think, that after twice being tormented by killers posing as a character named Ghostface (voiced by Roger L. Jackson), that Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) would have taken every self-defense class known to man. I would think she would have trained enough to be a black belt in something. But by the time we reach Scream 3, that is not the case. Instead, Sidney lives far out, away from everyone. Not necessarily a bad idea when trying to get away from a past like Sidney has, but I think the martial arts training would be good too.

Ghostface tries to draw out Sidney

Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) has earned a name for himself after being found innocent of murder and released from prison. He even has his own talk show. Yet, because he has a connection to Sidney, he meets his demise.

The killer, dressed as Ghostface, is looking for Sidney. The problem is, she is in hiding. To bring her out, Ghostface first kills Cotton and his girlfriend. He then begins to kill the people on a movie set.

Ghostface targets the cast of Stab 3

Stab 3 is the third movie in a horror movie series based on Sidney’s experiences with Ghostface. Anyone who is set to appear in the movie is at risk. Cotton had a small part and he was killed. Next killed is Sarah Darling (Jenny McCarthy), who was cast to play a character named Candy.

Cotton and Sarah are murdered in the order they are killed in the script, implying that whoever dies next in the script will be the person murdered in real life. But there is a problem. There are multiple versions of the script floating around, and three different people could be next in line to die. Jennifer Jolie (Parker Posey), the actress portraying reporter Gale Weathers, is certain the script where she is killed next is correct.

Jennifer is dating Deputy Dewey Riley (David Arquette). Having first-hand experience with Ghostface, Dewey says he came to work on the set to be a consultant, but he really suspects someone from the movie is after Sidney. Someone tried to get Sidney’s file from the police in their hometown. They even broke in to get it, but Dewey had already removed the file to keep it safe. Now he is on set to figure out who is trying to find her.

The police bring Gale Weathers in to help

Investigative reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox Arquette), the person who has written about Sidney’s life, both about Sidney’s mother’s murder and about Ghostface, is called in by the police to help. Detective Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey) met Gale after one of her presentations, and now she is part of the group trying to figure out what is going on with Ghostface this time.

With both Dewey and Gale helping the police, the only person missing in this investigation is Sidney. Kincaid wants to talk to her, but Dewey refuses to reveal her location. This does not go over well with Kincaid at all, which is why it is a good thing Sidney shows up on her own.

Sidney comes out of hiding

Sidney appears at the police station because Ghostface has found her. With her location known, there is no reason to hide anymore. She now wants to help.

It is at the police station that Sidney discovers a part of the case she was unaware of before. At each murder scene, an old picture of her mother is left behind. These are pictures Sidney has never seen and does not know what they mean.

To keep her safe, Sidney is kept at the police station while the others run around investigating. This only works until Ghostface calls and tells Sidney that Gale and Dewey are being held captive. Sidney must leave the station to save them, setting up a final showdown.

Some surprise appearances

There are some interesting cameos in this movie. Jay (Jay Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith), characters from a different series of movies, were in one scene. Carrie Fisher was in another, playing someone who looks a lot like Carrie Fisher.

Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) also makes an appearance, despite having died in Scream 2. His sister, Martha (Heather Matarazzo), brings a video he made, explaining what to expect in the final installment of a horror trilogy.

An all too familiar scenario

Something disturbing in this movie is all the talk of what Hollywood life was life for women when Sidney’s mother, Maureen (Lynn McRee), was young. A movie producer (Roger Corman) talks about how women had to do certain “things” in order for them to get anywhere in Hollywood. He then goes on to talk about how sometimes “things happened,” AKA rape, and acts as though it is not a big deal. Even years later, from when Maureen was in Hollywood to the time when this movie was released, there is no acknowledgement from the producer that what he and others in Hollywood did was wrong. In fact, the producer sounds like he is still participating in such acts. Females having to have sex with people to get parts is a recurring theme in this movie.

A cast of incredibly lucky characters

I find it incredible that no matter how hurt or injured Sidney, Gale, and Dewey get, they always survive. All other cast members in these movies wish they could be so lucky.
