My Big Fat Geek Wedding

There is something about watching a wedding come together that is absolutely fascinating.   I am not talking about the fighting, the tears, or the mishaps.   What I like to see is the dress being chosen, where the flowers came from, and how the location is transformed.   The drama can go somewhere else.   I want to see the creation of the wedding from start to finish.   My Big Fat Geek Wedding , a recent Premiere Event on Syfy, did this, but with a twist.   The wedding that was held was not traditional, it was based on fantasy.                       Mandie Bettencourt and Julian Roman want a wedding that involves their love of fantasy.   They are looking to have a theme of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones but are having a hard time finding a weddi...

Taking Chance

When Taking Chance first came out, I heard about the film but I did not know much about it.   I knew it starred Kevin Bacon and that his character was in the military.   Also I knew the film had something to do with visiting the family of a fallen soldier.   Beyond that the movie was a mystery to me.   Then it showed up in the recommended film section and I threw it on my list.   The disc would arrive when it arrives and that was it.   After seeing the film I am so happy I put it in my queue.   Even though it is on the short side, every minute has a lot of impact and I feel this is a film everyone should see.                               Marine Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl (Kevin Bacon) is struggling with the fact that he is no...

Sleepless in Seattle

When I think of Turner Classic Movies (TCM) I think of films that were made long before I was born.   Okay, maybe not long before, but definitely not ones that were released in my lifetime.   A movie that was in the theatres in the ‘90s would definitely be too new to be aired on a classic movie channel.                 This is what ran through my head when I saw Sleepless in Seattle was going to be on TCM.   Then I realized Sleepless in Seattle has been around for twenty years.   I could not believe it had been that long since the film was released to theatres.   Then I saw the computer screens used in the film and saw that, oh, yes, the movie is that old.   Technology is so different now and it is really strange to see how it used to be.   But the different technology does not make the mo...

King of the Nerds

I don’t know why, but I love the show King of the Nerds .   It is something I look forward to every week.   In fact, I have eagerly awaited the second season for an entire year.   When the first season ended, I hoped there would be a second one on air very soon.   Some reality competition shows have two seasons a year and I really wanted King of the Nerds to be one of those shows.   Unfortunately it wasn’t and I had to wait, but it was worth it.                    When talking about the basic structure, King of the Nerds is not that different from other reality competition shows.   The contestants are split up into teams and each week the teams face a new challenge.   After the challenge, two members of the losing team are selected for possible elimination. ...

Kinky Boots

The Oscars are this weekend!   As usual I am excited about the broadcast as I want to see if I am right in my guesses of who the winners will be.   One of my favorite nominees this year is Chiwetel Ejiofor.   He is nominated in the best actor category for his work in 12 Years a Slave .   I have not yet seen 12 Years a Slave so Mr. Ejiofor’s work in it is not why he is one of my favorite nominees.   My excitement for this actor all has to do with a role he performed years ago in a film called Kinky Boots .                   Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) is out to create his own path in life.   He is moving out of town and leaving the family shoe manufacturing business behind him.   His fiancée, Nicola (Jemima Rooper), is waiting for him in their new apartment an...

Figure Skating

I know I wrote about the 2014 Winter Olympics last week, but it is honestly still what I am paying attention to most.   This is especially true with the figure skating events.   Since these are airing live, I am literally watching for hours a day.   Then at night I watch the replay.   That is a lot of time with figure skating.   I will admit, some days things feel a little long, but I enjoy what I am watching and that is what matters.                      There has been some really exciting skating this Olympics.   Often this comes from people I do not usually see or have never seen before.   As I am able to watch each event live and see everyone who skates, I have been introduced to some really interesting people.   Two in the men’s event come to mind first. ...

2014 Winter Olympics

I am sure I am not alone when I say that right now the Winter Olympics is what I am paying attention to most.   In some ways it is hard not to.   Olympic news is everywhere.   Medal counts, athlete human interest stories, and competition upsets are all talked about on a regular basis.   While I do find all this interesting, especially learning about the athletes, the true excitement lies in watching the events as they play out.   When I say watch, I mean truly watching, as in live.                        NBC does a pretty good job with their nightly broadcasts.   Everything is taped because of the time difference between the U.S. and Russia, but they try to cover as many highlights as possible.   However, the live action I am able to watch dur...
