The Perfect Mistress by Victoria Alexander
I am really glad my mom warned me about the hero of this book. If she had not, I do not know how well I could have gotten through it. Which would have been a shame since it is a good book.
Lady Julia Winterset is a cash-strapped widow who has been given her great-grandmother’s memoirs. Lady Hermione Middlebury led what people in the 19th century would call a scandalous life. After her husband died, she had many affairs, some with prominent people. Then she wrote about them in her memoirs.
Struggling with money, Lady Julia decides to do something with the memoirs, but she is not quite sure what, maybe publication. She confides in her two widowed friends, Portia and Veronica. Veronica is the sister-in-law of the hero, Harrison Landingham, Earl of Mountdale. He is not happy to hear these memoirs may become published. His father is mentioned in the writing and Harrison does not like even the hint of scandal. Harrison will do whatever he can to keep the memoirs from publication. The problem is he falls in love with Lady Julia in the process, even though he does not like intelligent women and feels women need to be guided and led in life matters.
Do you see why I have a problem with this man?
Lady Julia is a great character and Lady Hermione, who keeps popping up as a ghost, is a riot. I do not know if more books are in the works of if this is a stand alone. It would be nice to have more stories as Portia and Veronica remain unmarried. I would also like to know what happens to the book publisher as he seems really sweet.
