Baby Love by Catherine Anderson
This is one of the very few series I have read where I did not start at the beginning or even in order. Actually I think I read book three first. Eventually I got on track and read all the present day stories. All except for Baby Love. For some reason it took until now for me to read this book. Which is funny since it starts the whole series.
Maggie is a young woman running away with her baby. She climbs on a train knowing it is dangerous but does not feel she has any other choice. Even though she tries to stay out of sight, she attracts the attention of the other rail riders and inadvertently gets herself in trouble. Although he is reluctant at first, a man named Rafe comes to her rescue. Rafe has been riding the rails since his wife and children died in a car accident. He knows how to defend himself, but he also likes to keep to himself. Despite this, he cannot let the other riders attack Maggie.
Once he saves her, Rafe realizes there is more going on than he initially thought. Maggie is terribly beaten, and it did not come from the rail riders. Someone hurt her before she ever got on the train. Rafe makes the decision to take care of Maggie and her baby despite her refusal to accept his help. She will not tell Rafe what, or who, she is running from and does not want to owe him anything.
After much persuasion, Rafe convinces Maggie to not only go to his ranch for safety, but also to marry him. He has quickly grown to care for Maggie and her child and will do whatever he can to get her to trust him. Maggie, however, has a hard time letting go of her past. There are others she wishes to save and she fears someone may come back into her life and haunt her.
Rafe is mentioned in many of the other books in the series. I am happy to now know his story and how the whole journey of the series began. It is a really good series and I hope there are many more to come.
Just a note: Most of the men in this series, Rafe included, end up being really sweet and good guys. Who would not want to read about that?
